Anderson/Gaylor student, Tyler Wallen, has been nominated for the Work + Learn 18th Annual Impact Awards. Tyler has been attending the Anderson Crossing for almost 2 years. His story is a powerful one because Tyler had dropped out of school before attending our campus. He was 2 years out of school when he heard about the Crossing as a place where he could restart academically and get back on track. It was a fresh start in many ways and now, Tyler is set to graduate this semester – on time – even after having been out of school for 2 full years. His ability to catch up academically is just one illustration of Tyler’s work ethic. Tyler participates in the Crossing’s Work-Based Learning experience hours at our affiliate campus inside Gaylor Electric. He says that this is where he has seen and tasted real success. He says, “Every day is a job interview. I do the best I can every day, and I take advantage of the opportunities given to me. I ensure I’m working hard and doing what needs to be done.”
About the Crossing
Since 2003, the Crossing has provided an avenue for educational success, specifically designed for students who struggle in a traditional school environment. Our Founder, Rob Staley, a former Principal of Concord High School in Elkhart, was passionate about making a difference in the lives of teens looking for a fresh start. He started out with a handful of students and a dream of helping them navigate challenges to find success in life and learn through academics, job training, and faith-based character education. Our students come from all corners of the educational landscape. In recent years, the Crossing has developed Career Pathway Programs for students who need a practical hands-on education. Our welcoming and safe family environment helps our students feel a genuine sense of belonging.
